INSPIRATION: The louche, sun-drenched vibe embodied in St. Tropez (pictured above) by Puerto Rican–born fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez, created for French Vogue in 1970, and rediscovered by us in 100 Years of Fashion Illustration (Laurence King, 384 pages, $44) by Cally Blackman.
“I never saw anyone more gifted at sketching than Antonio,” said Karl Lagerfeld of the illustrator whose flamboyant and constantly evolving style dominated the pages of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle from the late ’60s up until the mid-’80s.

As an early member of Lagerfeld’s entourage, Lopez was invited to spend the summer of 1970 knocking back chilled gin in a house the designer rented in sunny Saint-Tropez. Green sunglasses, $20, available at Junction Mode (390 Pacific, 416-766-0338, www.junctionmode.com).

On the beach, Lopez wore wide-leg herringbone trousers while Lagerfeld worked a 1920s one-piece bathing suit. We think a boho scarf accessorizes either choice well. Venera Seta linen and silk print scarf, $38, also available at Junction Mode.

Lopez and his partner, art director Juan Ramos, are often credited for introducing American pop art to Paris (and Lagerfield). Insight51 (www.insight51.com) psychedelic-print bikini, $69, and vintage butterfly brooch, $12.95, both available at Lavish & Squalor
(253 Queen W., 416-599-4779, www.lavishandsqualor.com).
