Toronto’s newest building that might poke you in the eye has opened in the Distillery District. The “Pure Spirit” condo and loft tower includes a glass “flatiron”–style podium that comes to a perfect and dramatic point at Parliament and Mill streets. Architectural purists may not like where it is located, but glass towers adjacent to Victorian buildings is a unique Toronto look and should be celebrated (when done right) for preserving historic buildings and keeping them part of the evolving and living city. Replacing an ugly parking lot, the building also opens up a new grand entrance into the Distillery that finally connects the site with the St. Lawrence neighbourhood.
