BOOKA SHADE
With DJs Nitin, Jonny White. Thu, July 31. CiRCA, 126 John. $18.50 advance tickets at Play De Record, Rotate This, Soundscapes.
With the success of tracks like “Body Language” and their 2006 Movements album, Berlin’s Booka Shade became poster boys for accessible, contemporary techno. The duo of Arno Kammermeier and Walter Merziger craft rich, inviting tracks and do not disappoint when performing them live. They’ve been on an almost perpetual tour for the past two years, stopping long enough to record their third album, The Sun and the Neon Light. For better and for worse, the album is Booka Shade’s most diverse and vocal-heavy to date, but judging by their excellent live show at the Mod Club last March, the duo will rework much of it for the stage.

It’s an all-Canadian house party at this edition of Deep End and at the centre of it all is supremely talented singer Sacha Williamson. Possessing a distinctive and supple voice that absolutely makes me melt, this teacher of jazz vocals at York University has long been the go-to gal for a wide array of house producers. She’s recorded with almost everyone on this bill, with recent standouts including “Time” by Nick Holder, “Changes” by Gene King and “Praying for Rain” by Martino, who accompanies Williamson here.
