NEWCLEUS @ ACTIVATOR With Dougie Boom, Barbi, more. Sat, Nov 22. Wrongbar, 1279 Queen W. Limited $10 advance tickets at Rotate This, Play De Record.
DMoney’s Activator parties are dedicated to ‘70s and ‘80s R&B, electro, hip-hop and funk, and DMoney has had the wisdom to showcase influential artists who deserve the recognition, such as Egyptian Lover who appeared this past May. Now Activator ups the ante with the debut Toronto appearance of Brooklyn’s futuristic electro/hip-hop pioneers Newcleus. Best known for their ‘80s singles “Jam-On Revenge” (a.k.a. “Wikki-Wikki”) and “Jam On It,” Newcleus released two albums of space gems before they parted ways in ’85. Their music never left, and now original members Cozmo D, Chilly B and Lady E are back. Don’t sleep!

RUNAWAY With DJs Brennan Green, Nasty Nav. Fri, Nov 21. Wrongbar, 1279 Queen W. $10.
DFA Records has released excellent EPs of late, among them “Brooklyn Club Jam,” a piano-driven chunk of instrumental goodness owing as much to early Chicago house as it does to the home borough of Runaway’s Jacques Renault and Marcos Cabral. In the past two years, this duo have dropped strong disco-punk edits and originals, and garnered support from the likes of Lindstrøm and The Glimmers. Runaway will also be collaborating with Toronto expat Brennan Green — himself a leading light in the global new-disco movement — and dropping a single on Green’s Chinatown Records. For the true underground sound of now, look no further.
FEDDE LE GRAND With DJs Funkerman, Manzone & Strong. Fri, Nov 21. This Is London, 364 Richmond W. $20 before midnight, $25 after.
Dutch producer/DJ Fedde Le Grand shot to superstar status over this past year thanks to chunky, melodic electro-house singles including “Put Your Hands Up for Detroit” and “3 Minutes to Explain,” the latter a collaboration with his friend Funkerman. The pair also run the Flamingo label, which is soon set to release Le Grand’s highly anticipated Output album. As Le Grand revealed when we spoke this past February, the album features vocals from the likes of Ida Corr, Camille Jones and Will.I.am. No doubt it will be as massive as the man’s hooks.
