I like making films that are unconventional. I asked a good buddy of mine if he had any pieces of writing from his blog that we could turn into an interesting 1 minute film. I remember reading Beachcomb Revue and thinking, “wow this is weird” but I really liked it.
Dedication,' explores exactly what we can accomplish with belief and dedication. It’s about the 'Dedication,' of a Tibetan monk and how he overcomes incredible physical and emotional obstacles in order to fulfill his masters request, ‘To journey by foot from his remote home village in Tibet all the way to Nepal.'
The film is seen as through a camera lens. Black surrounds the figure, closing in on him, accentuating a claustrophobic feel. Close-ups and irregular camera moves reveal the man's unstable mind, and pitiable living arrangements. Clearly, he lives alone.
'Charlie' was an experiment. I wanted to do something really disturbing, but with showing almost nothing. My wife was absolutely horrified at the idea (we have two little boys) and said "No way. And you can't use any of our stuff."
For 'Broken Trees', I wanted to add to the story of Charlie, but without necessarily answering the really interesting questions. Is it a sequel? is it a prequel? Does it explain things more clearly?
