Blogariddims RIP

One day we veterans of the mid-‘00s MP3 blog gold rush will struggle to describe what that initial explosion of choices was like. The Blogariddims podcast series is the best approximation of that feeling I can think of — when genre-focused mixes are a tracklist away, these DJs’ thoughtful mixes frequently made impossible connections between genres, like mad scientists MacGyvering a bomb out of chewing gum and stray lemons.

Organized by Dublin’s Droid since 2006, the series’ 50 episodes run the gamut from Ottawa’s own Paul Nomos’ dubstep-and-breaks-muddying “Moving South” (a personal fave) to Heatwave’s Brit MC-focused “An England Story,” which spawned its own acclaimed Soul Jazz compilation. To cap the series, Droid has assembled 10 final sets from the likes of Nomos, Nick Guttabreakz and other top crate-diggers. If you’ve never checked the series out before, the archives are still up and well worth a trawl. And if you’ve been a loyal follower, maybe it’s time to get off the sidelines and contribute something instead of just endlessly hitting Save As…

MEGASOID’S MEGASET
Every day I wake up and wonder how Sasha Frere-Jones continues to be employed by The New Yorker. Not because he’s not doing a great job as their pop critic, but because when Montreal “lazer-bass” duo Megasoid drop their new mixtape on S/FJ’s blog for the highbrow magazine’s annual festival, it upsets my understanding of the world as a place where DJ culture and earnest features about soil erosion are kept very, very separate. At this rate I will not be shocked if Alice Munro lays claim to having invented the remix.

MP3 OF THE WEEK
CFCF, “Sogni Rossi”: This ominous new-wave disco track by Montreal producer CFCF isn’t new, but a shout-out for his new, starry-eyed and equally dope single “Invitation To Love” via Gorilla Vs. Bear led me to it. Maybe The Walrus should ask him if they can repost?
