KAP BAMBINO @ MORE PROOF
With DJs Jean Nipon, Bobmo, More Proof DJs. Sat, Aug 9. The Drake Underground, 1150 Queen W. $5.
Can’t get enough of distorted disco-punk? Check out Bordeaux, France’s Kap Bambino, comprised of vocalist/shouter Caroline Martial and producer Orion Bouvier. Together, they make electro that borders on metal, with mags like the NME and Dazed and Confused giving two neon thumbs up to Kap Bambino’s frantic sounds and hyperactive live shows. They’ve drawn many a comparison to Crystal Castles and seem to be following a similar path of blog-frenzy and sold-out runs of singles. They’ll perform live, with 17-year-old DJ/producer Bobmo and Institubes’ resident DJ Jean Nipon, also in from France, joining the More Proof gang.

TÉLÉPATHIQUE
With DJ Nasty Nav. Sat, Aug 9. Wrongbar, 1279 Queen W. $10.
They may not yet be well known here, but São Paulo-based duo Télépathique are likely to make a large impression on North America with the release here of their debut album, Last Time on Earth. Working together since 2005, producer and drummer Erico Theobaldo (a.k.a. DJ Periferico) and vocalist Mylene Pires create rock-infused electronics that come heavy with the pop, house and breaks. Theobaldo had a huge hit with his remix of “Dadinho,” from the City Of God soundtrack, and has produced numerous Brazilian artists. Pires also performs solo, singing music steeped in African and Brazilian music traditions. Télépathique perform as a trio at this, their Toronto debut.

SOULWAX @ THE TIME FESTIVAL
With Erol Alkan, A-Trak, Matthew Dear, Hatiras, Heidi, Jokers of the Scene, Mario J, Fritz Helder and the Phantoms, VND/LSM, Nasty Nav, more. Sun, Aug 10. Sunnyside Pavilion, 1100 Lakeshore Blvd W. $24.50 advance tickets at Rotate This, Play De Record, Soundscapes, Wantickets.com/embrace. 1pm.
The TIME Festival truly is timely. This inaugural edition, which is devoted to the danceclub sounds of now, boasts a lineup of some of the biggest international and Canadian names in electro, house, indie, dance and techno, all performing on two outdoor stages at the historic beachfront venue Sunnyside Pavilion. There is much excitement about Belgian band Soulwax headlining the On Time stage, especially since ringleader Stephen Dewaele has promised to make up for his no-show at the Opera House in April of 2007. Judging by the footage I’ve seen from the forthcoming Soulwax live-show documentary, Part of the Weekend Never Dies, the wait for the brothers Dewaele (also known as 2 Many DJs) will be worth it. Other On Time stage highlights include a return appearance by British DJ/producer Erol Alkan and a party set by Fool’s Gold head honcho A-Trak. Meanwhile, the Time Out stage leans heavier on techno and house, with a headlining set by the constantly innovative Matthew Dear. Check www.time-festival.com for details.

PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS
With Notes to Self, DJs Circle Research. Wed, Aug 13. El Mocambo, 464
Spadina Av. $15 advance tickets at Rotate This, Soundscapes, Play De Record, Ticketmaster.
Funky, fresh Los Angeles hip-hop duo People Under The Stairs first made their presence known with the release of The Next Step in 1998. Since then, Messieurs Mike Turner (Double K) and Chris Portugal (Thes One) have turned out four full-lengths, with jazzy samples, witty rhymes and strong writing at their core. Their love of early hip-hop is obvious: the title of their forthcoming album, Fun DMC, speaks volumes. P.S. Local crew Notes To Self hit the stage at 9pm and will no doubt drop bits from their debut album, A Shot In The Dark, due out shortly on British label BBE.
